Green Guides

Green infrastructure for the city,
its citizens and its rivers

Compendium of guidelines
for the design and implementation
green infrastructure in urban areas

The team SEE-URBAN-WATER (SUW) presents this compendium of guidelines for the promotion of green infrastructure in urban areas, based on the experience gained during the development of the project in a study area in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Costa Rica.

The promotion strategy consists of the participatory and interdisciplinary development of small-scale green infrastructure examples for the generation and dissemination of new knowledge. The promotion and implementation of green infrastructure in developed urban areas requires the rethinking of the use of space towards multifunctionality, therefore, the involvement of multiple actors in a participatory manner is sought. The innovative and transformative character of green infrastructure elements often requires spaces for experimentation and exemplification, where knowledge can be generated that contributes to the scaling up and mainstreaming of green infrastructures.

In this context and from our own experience, we present a series of guidelines that contribute to achieving specific objectives of the strategy. These guides suggest and describe steps to follow, accompanied by additional sources of information and practical examples from SUW‘s experience; which can be found under the symbol EXP. The guidelines are grouped into four Processes: Communication and Stakeholder Engagement and Data Collection and Analysis of the Implementation Area, which aim to facilitate the development of context-specific solutions; and Selection of an Experimental Area and Implementation and Monitoring of Green Infrastructure Prototypes.
